YWCA hopes funding will bolster 43-year-old facility
If
only the next roof would last the YWCA 43 years.
That's the hope of YWCA of High Point Executive Director
Heidi Majors.
First, though, she needs to replace the one that's
there, a roof that's been on the building since it was
built in 1960.
"We have the original roof that was on the building,"
Majors said. "And the pool roof has been leaking for
about six months, and we've had some patchwork done."
But patching
the roof merely is putting off the inevitable, Majors
said, so the High Point nonprofit, located in on
Gatewood Avenue, hopes to raise enough money for that
new roof.
Toward that end, the High Point Community Foundation
gave the organization $11,700 for the job and the Millis
Foundation gave the organization $6,800.
The High Point Community Foundation grant was part of
the foundation's annual grants that were announced
earlier this month. About $175,000 in grant money, some
of it in matching grants, was distributed to 34
nonprofit organizations in the area.
Paul Lessard, executive director of the foundation, said
the foundation decided to support the YWCA because the
nonprofit benefits the overall High Point community.
"That institution has such a diverse clientele," Lessard
said. "They have a good building, but they need a new
roof. One of the things that we want to do as an
organization is build community capital, and that's what
the YWCA has done."
A new roof for the entire building is estimated to cost
about $70,000, Majors said. The organization hopes to
raise $34,000 for the first phase of the project, which
includes the area of the roof over the pool.
"Our first goal is to get phase one done," Majors said.
"We've got some other grants out and we are talking
about doing some other fund-raisers."
Majors said the YWCA hopes to have the first phase
complete by early spring or summer.
The rest of the building, where the offices and other
facilities of the YWCA are located, will be done in a
second phase, costing an estimated $36,000.
